1962 ID19 "HelfrID"
The story of auntie Helfrids car

The 50th birthday present The gentleman with the coffee cup here, next to his beautiful SAAB 93 is Mr. Nils Fredriksson from Nyköping Sweden, a true motor man, employed as an airplane mechanic at the Royal Sördermanland Air Force Wing . In this picture he is seen posing with a couple friends with their 1960s ID19s. Clearly impressed by the Citroëns he later went on to order his very own brand new ID20 in September 1969, after negotiating a nice anniversary discount, including a favorable miscalculation according to Fredrikssons notes, that made it his for only 19,300 SEK. (Listing price was 23.300 SEK) He also noted selling the SAAB at 1.599 SEK.

October 4 1969 A brand new Citroën ID20 with chassis number 3.829.807 left the showroom of Bilfirma Rolf Ericsson in Södertälje, Sweden. Finished in elegant AC096 Blanc Albâtre (Alabaster white, only available this year) with black roof and red interior, destined for a long life with a careful owner. Mr Fredriksson proudly picked up the car with his family, the same day friends of the family picked up an identical car and a brand new Dyane.

2007 Mr. Fredriksson was to keep the car for the rest of his life, being an airplane mechanic he took exceptional care of the car, still visible today are little improvements, details and markings, he was aslo keeping a meticulous logbook of every little point, from refueling and cleaning to service and repairs over the decades until his passing in 2007 when the car was inherited by his son Nils-Olof for continued care and long time storage.

All original documents and logbook still intact
2012 The renown DS mechanic Mr. Per "Perre" Kjellberg took over, trading the ID20 for a motorcycle and carefully sorting the car our after years in storage, a dusty time capsule coming to life again in the hands of an expert. This is where I first got to know the car, as "Perre" was helping me with all sorts of Citroën projects over the years, including the 1960 ID19 "FAB" also seen in this picture.

2014 The car was owned by a doctor on the Swedish west coast for some summer driving.
2016 classic car enthusiast Mr. Thomas Lanthén took over care of the ID as part of his wonderful collection,
I met them several times on classic car events over the following years.

2026 it was finally my turn to continue enjoying this beautiful and well maintained Citroën.
Paint, interior and all details are all original, providing a wonderfully genuine and homogenous slight patina all over. (The original black roof is matte beyond rescue after all Mr. Fredrikssons polishing, so for now I have put a nice Gris Nacre foil on the roof for the good looks.)
As the car is running wonderfully, my focus is driving and carefully maintaining and improving on details, including my favorite game of finding and fitting rare new old stock parts to my cars...

Snapshots of the current state
1969 ID20 Historically the ID model was a rational alternative to the more complex DS models. In 1969 the ID20 model was the top spec of the ID range, with the larger 103hp engine of the DS20, manual 4 speed gearbox, high pressure breaks, power steering, turning headlights and a generous interior trim level. And of course the same epic suspension. The main thing still setting it apart from the DS is the more symmetrical design of the dashboard. The 1969 model year was also the only year featuring the elegant all black 1960s dashboards with square buttons, unique ashtray etc, before the more mainstream common ID/DS 70s dashboard came in 1970..,

From the Swedish broshure 1969
Swedish specification For the Swedish market there has always been some special details on ID/DS, a 1969 ID20 is no exception. As apposed to IDs elsewhere the Swedish ones feature the stainless indicator trumpets and hubcaps of the DS model. Wing mirrors, larger, branded mud-flaps and extra heating are other examples...
